Wren Academy
Wren Academy opened to students for the first time in September 2008. The Academy specialism is design and the built environment and their sponsor, the Church of England, enriches Wren Academy with a Christian ethos. Being a new school affords them an opportunity to embed best practice from the start and that, combined with their specialism and ethos, means it is timely and appropriate for Wren Academy to promote education for sustainable development and work towards becoming a sustainable school.
More specifically, Wren Academy asked Mr Greeny to deliver 4 things over the course of a year:
- An audit of their current sustainability performance - using the s3 tool
- An academy improvement plan that incorporates sustainability
- A framework for enriching the curriculum and Academy life
- A reassessment of performance after making changes
The plan exmplifies our Heads, Hearts and Hands approach and touches on several areas of the campus, community and curriculum. A few further aspects stand out:
- There is a long-term plan that shows (and is designed to measure) progression from start to finish
- The activities complement each other and comprehensively address Wren's wishlist
- Continual collaboration with key staff is designed to build capacity and have a deeper, lasting impact
- There is a focus on the Healthy Schools award, which is a recognised scheme and serves as an ideal means to access several of the 8 doorways of sustainable schools (Food & Drink, Global Dimension, Purchasing & Waste, Local Well-being and Inclusion & Participation)
Currently, we are at the audit stage. When it is complete it will be shared on this webpage and as progress is made in other areas developments will be posted here.
